Versailles - Part Trois: The Fountains

Within the gardens of Versailles, there are a lot of fountains. I don't know exactly how many...though I'm sure Amanda can tell us. Twenty, forty, fifty....there are fountains everywhere you look.

We spent upwards of 6 hours just walking around the gardens. We could have spent more. They have little restaurants hidden in the bushes where you can buy food to picnic. Public restrooms as well. Everything a king could want.

The fountains were the icing on the cake. During the summer on week-ends they turn on the fountains for 90 minutes each afternoon. This is no small matter, considering the fountains must use as much water as a normal town. The story goes that Louis initiated massive public works projects just to bring water to his fountains. Also, it goes, that servants were stationed in the gardens to turn on the fountains should he approach and to turn them off after he passed. Anyway, here are a few more photos to help you feel like a king.
