Lorraine: La Ferme Ouverte

We left Bitche and headed back to Strasbourg on the back roads through the northern Vosges mountains. Driving through one of the mountain villages, we stumbled across signs that said "Ferme Ouverte"...or Open Farm. Sure enough, on the edge of the village was an old farmstead that was hosting a kind of open house. They were selling honey and home-made pies and potato pancakes (galettes de pomme de terre). You could walk through their old barn (very old...probably older than any house in Indianapolis) and check out the cows living as cows had lived there for 200 years.
The farmer their was excited about the potato harvest coming in the next couple weeks. He offered to sell me a couple of hundred kilos cheap, and seemed disappointed when I told him that wouldn't staying in Strasbourg long enough to eat so many potatos.
