Doors in Our Neighborhood

Continuing with the tour of the neighborhood.....this post is just to show a few of the doors. I like doors. Evidently, architects like doors too. They certainly invested a lot of effort for many of the doorways to the apartment buildings in our neighborhood. I guess that this was the only way to make a statement about the wealth or to express the artistic sophistication of the occupants. After all, there are no front yards to landscape with pink flamingos or lawn jockeys or plywood cutouts of bent-over women. It is the decorative stone work that is really impressive. Check out the intro picture by double clicking. The detail in the carving of the Alsatian women is amazing.

The doorway is also where the architects would put their signature. For example, the doorway in the intro picture has an inscription "Falk and Wolf architects - 1906". Architects A. Brion and Berninger 1890The doorway above includes no mention of the archtitect. The crown of the arch is simply labeled with the year of construction - 1912.
